There's no doubt that the prices of PC's on offer
at the likes of PC World, Dell PCs & Laptops, Micro Direct, Dabs.com or even searching for a great deal
using a price finder like Kelkoo highlights the notion you can
get some great deals on a cheaper PC or spare laptop for a
busy home.
The next question I have is
- are they actually really great PC offers to you, the customer'?
You see, everybody's need for a PC will be different from person to person and what you find important in your
ideal PC will not necessarily be important to the next customer. "Stacking them high and selling them cheap"
is a mantra that has worked for many companies in the past because the same product can often fulfil broadly
similar needs.
However, in today's specialised PC market, a PC that's designed for gaming is going to be
completely different to a PC owned by someone who simply wishes to browse the internet or do some word processing or
spreadsheet documents. The price point for such different machines is likely to be at opposite ends of the price
spectrum as well, which is expected, of course. I suppose the analogy we can think of is it's like buying a Rolls
Royce when you only need a Vauxhall Corsa to do what you need it to - it's overkill, frankly. Why pay extra
for an overly-powerful PC, or alternatively get a cheap PC to do something it isn't built to do if you need to
use more demanding software or products than they can handle? Unless you ask, how will you know? When it's too
late and you've already bought the PC - that's when!!
Not all PC's are made equally and it's this you must bear in mind. We
suggest you make a list of your priorities and needs and give us a call to tell you how we can build it for you at a very
reasonable cost with superb support and service.

I went into a number of PC retailers a while back and it is quite scary how many of them do not
ask you what you are buying and the kind of PC you hope to run it on. To be honest, most of the sales assistants
aren't necessarily experts in this field and they aren't paid for that level of service, so it isn't necessarily their
fault. Many of the assumptions made are that you already know what you are buying and I assume these
PC retailers get a lot of returns because the sales assistant never thought to ask me what
machine I have at home first. Again, not all products will run on a standard PC machine and this is
another area we can advise our customers on.
I bought an external hard drive recently (160GB) from a PC retailer and thought I would test
this theory out again - and I'm afraid to say nothing has really changed. Running a 160GB external hard drive on a
Windows ME laptop would mean it could only use 137GB of the drive using the FAT32 file system and then it would need to be
partitioned to use the rest as a separate drive potentially, but when I asked the assistant, he didn't have a clue about
what I was talking about and it took nearly 10 minutes to get an answer I already knew from somebody else there.
I hope this story proves a point to you that there are smaller, more knowledgeable companies willing to help you
more and for less money as we don't have to find the revenues to pay for extensive shop floor space or ground
rents!
But there's more - for you, buying a PC should be
considered similar to buying a car. You should take your time to weigh up what's important to you and what your needs
are going to be. Just because a deal you saw on the TV, heard on the radio or read in a newspaper for a cheap
laptop or desktop PC looks good, it isn't necessarily a solution to fit your needs - and in many cases,
even these supposed cheap or great PC deals can still be overpriced as well!
